2008-2009 Swim/Dive Team ready for a Huge Season in the Pool
The Male High School Swim and Dive Team is gearing up for another winning season this year under the direction of Coach Josh Poore. Male's team swam and dove at state finals last year, and finished tenth overall. This place was the highest in its' programs' history. For the girl's team, diver Lindsey Stephen's finished 6th overall in state, and is expected to finish in the top 3 this year. On the guy’s side, Male made its best showing, with all-star sophomore Devan Terry leading the way. Devan won the men' 100 meter breast stroke by defeating defending state champion Grant Cooksey. This was the first time since 2001, that Male has had a State Champion in Swimming or Diving. He also placed 3rd overall in the 100 meter butterfly. Also on the men's team were Zach Cunningham, Alex & Charlie Davis. This relay team along with Devan as anchor finished top ten in the 200 meter freestyle and 200 meter Medley. This season, the Bulldogs are expected to go to state again in both swimming and diving. The senior captains are Alex Davis and Paige Lechner. The team numbers this year haven't been determined, but looks as if we will have at least 45 swimmers total. This team marks the largest that Male has ever had.
Bulldog Basketball ready to Challenge Tough Seventh Region
The 2008-2009 Male Basketball season looks like it’s got the potential to be another excellent year for the Bulldogs. Only one starter from last years highly ranked team returns but several other players made major contributions off the bench and many others look like they’re ready to step up. Seniors 6’6 OJ Bell leads the senior class in experience and looks to be the top big man in the 7th Region. OJ has the ability to score down low as well as hit the 15 foot jump shot. 6’5 Jametrius Brasher has improved greatly and should add to the teams inside force. It is clear from watching Jam over the past 3 years that his best basketball lies ahead of him. Tyler Reynolds, a 6’2 forward added some key minutes off the bench and is one of the team’s best passers. Tyler will be a force to be reckoned with as he is impossible for our opponents to read. Also Tony Branch, a 5’10 guard, should be able to use his exceptional quickness to terrorize opponent’s guards. Tony is perhaps one of the best athletes in our program and will be entertaining to watch. The Rest of the Dawgs 5’11 Junior guard Kevin Glenn was a starter and averaged 8.3 points per game last year. He has explosive offensive abilities, being able to score in a variety of ways. Several Division I schools have already started to take a strong interest in Kevin. D’Carlo Hayes, a 5’10 junior, showed he’s more than ready to take over the point guard spot. D’Carlo played major minutes as a sophomore and proved this past summer he will be a strong penetrating point guard who can get to the basket and finish. He was the tournament MVP of the Derek Smith Tournament in which the Bulldogs won this past summer. 6’2 James Pillischafske is in his 3rd season as a varsity player. James looks to be one of the premier 3 point shooters in the state this year. With his performance from last year, shooting well over 40% from three point range, and 23 of 41 in the last 9 games, James is earning the accolades. Also in the Junior ranks is Tony Horne. Tony saw limited playing time last season, but was explosive when he came off the bench. He has grown as a player, and concluded this summer with being integral to an impressive championship over 30 teams in the Derek Smith Shootout. Other Juniors to watch this year include Hunter Osbourne, Donavis Duncan, Kameron Mason, Phil Whitfield, and Aaron Kimbrough. Each of these young men has shown their growth athletically, and has the ability to help to make the 2008-2009 season memorable.
Lady Bulldogs Ready for Action This should be an exciting season for us this year as we have 6 seniors coming back for their last year at Dear Old High School! One of the best parts of my job is watching my girls mature into some of the most amazing people that I have ever met. Every year I have to say goodbye to a group, some larger than others, that I have grown close to and hopefully influenced in a positive way. This year the seniors have a special place in my heart and a “Now or Never” attitude. As with most seniors they are feeling a sense of urgency. I have been not so patiently waiting for them to understand that their time is almost up and that they need to and are able to do what has not been done at Male since 1996. This summer they participated in Georgetown College’s summer basketball camp and defeated all of the teams that participated. More than anything, they would like to go to the State Tournament in March. In order to do that they obviously must get out of our District (Mercy and Manual) and then win one of the toughest Regions in the State. The good thing is that this is a very determined group of seniors and the underclassmen are of similar mind. They like to win and hate to lose.
